CHSCA Football Award Winner Interviews, CT High School Football Head Coaching Vacancies.
Last week, the NFP Sports team was in attendance for the CHSCA All State Football Banquet where we conducted multiple interviews with the various award winners. We had the chance to talk to Coach Unger from West Haven, John Neider from Jonathan Law, Coach Sagnella of North Haven, and Coach Marinelli of New Canaan.
When we spoke with Coach Sagnella who won CHSCA Coach of the Year, we asked him about his first State Championship win along with what it meant to win the award.
With Coach Unger, who won CHSCA Assistant Coach of the Year, we discussed why this season was so special and how himself and the other coaches on the staff stepped up with Coach Bo being away from the program due to health concerns.
The CHSCA Player of the Year was Jonathan Law quarterback John Neider. We spoke with him about what it felt like winning Player of the Year and what he plans to do after he graduates high school this spring.
The final interview we conducted was with New Canaan High School head coach Lou Marinelli. New Canaan took home the Team of the Year award for the 2022 season. When we interviewed the legendary head coach, we asked him what made this years State Championship different than the previous twelve he’s won.
CT High School Football Head Coaching Vacancies
In an article published two days prior by CT INSIDER, Pete Paguaga listed the eight football head coaching vacancies around the state of Connecticut.
Coginchaug/Hale Ray/East Hampton coach Mike Eagle stepped down after three seasons coaching the Blue Devils. In his time with the team, Eagle went 6-14. This position is currently vacant. In the FCIAC, Darien head coach Mike Forget resigned after just two seasons. In that period, he coached the dominant Blue Wave program to an 18-5 record and a Class LL State Championship victory in 2021. This position is currently vacant.
Staying in the southern part of the state, Hillhouse High School has filled the vacancy that they had at head coach after Reggie Lytle resigned. Lytle posted a 50-45 record in nine seasons and won the Class M State Championship in 2016. Taking his spot is Hillhouse alum Walter Gibbs. Gibbs has been on the Southern Connecticut State staff as an assistant for the past sixteen years. Another job that’s been filled is the vacancy at New London High School. After five seasons and a record of 17-23, Coach Johnny Burns stepped down and Bobby Sanchez has been hired as the Whalers next head coach. Sanchez was an assistant with Valley Regional and was on the staff that won the Class S Large State Championship in 2014. Sanchez was the head coach at Hamden High School in 2021 and was with Middletown last season.
In the CCC, the Newington Nor'Easters have a vacancy at head coach after Jason Pace stepped down. After five seasons with Newington, Pace went 24-27 including a playoff berth in 2019. This position is currently vacant. Moving north, Tolland High School is searching for a new head coach after Mitch Egazarian stepped down. In two seasons, Egazarian went 11-9 including a 7-3 record in 2021. This position is currently vacant.
Westhill High School coach Aland Joseph resigned following two seasons where he went 2-18 with the Vikings. The reasoning for his resignation has been noted as family obligations. This position is currently vacant. The last vacancy that Pete Paguaga wrote about is at Weston High School. Coach Dan Hassett resigned after being with the Trojans for thirteen years, the last six as the teams head coach. He ended his time at Weston with a record of 33-22 including a 2019 Class M State Championship over Killingly High School. This position is currently vacant.
