The NFP Sports team is back in action after a loaded weekend of cheerleading and wrestling across the state of Connecticut. There’s much to get into the Monday including ECC Athlete of the Week, highlighting our lovely Golf Discount Pack, and announcing that tickets for the ECC Girls Basketball Finals are now on sale.
ECC Athlete of the Week
We’re back with two winners for ECC Athlete of the Week. After seeing thirteen very talented student athletes, the votes have been tallied. Before we see the winners, here are the candidates.
For ECC Boys Athlete of the Week, we have Kaden Ware from Killingly High School who won his third ECC Wrestling Championship. Staying on the mat, James Linder Jr. from Montville High School won an ECC Wrestling title and was named the tournaments outstanding wrestler. Out of New London High School is Henry Santana-Liriano who won the heavyweight title at the ECC Wrestling Championship. Jacob Lenz from Ledyard won the long jump event at the Class M State Championships. DeAndre Ducael from Norwich Free Academy won the Class LL State Championship in shot-put with a throw of 48’10.5 setting a new personal record by 4’. Josh Mooney from Stonington High School took first in the 55 meter hurdles, first in long jump, and second in the 55 meter event at the Class S State Championship. On the court Deondre Bransford from Wheeler High School averaged 15 points and 11 board over two games. The last candidate for ECC Boys Athlete of the Week is Jaiden Lopez of Lyman Memorial High School as he 43 points over two games and reached the 1,000 career points mark.
Shifting to ECC Girls Athlete of the Week, we have five candidates. Natalie Guzman from Killingly High School recovered from an injury to take sixth at the ECC Championship event. Jenny Lopez from Lyman Memorial High School dropped 40 points, 21 assists, 19 rebounds, an 16 steals over a three game span where one of the games resulted in a Lopez triple double vs Putnam. Shifting to track, Darielys Arnold from New London High Schoolwon the long jump event and took second in high jump at the Class M State Championship. Alexis Boyer from Norwich Free Academy on the pole vault event and took third in the 4x800 relay at the Class LL State Championship. Last and certainly not least is Bella Sorrentino from Woodstock Academytook second in shot-put, sixth in the 55 meter hurdles, and sixth in the 4x200 relay at the Class L State Championship.
This weeks winners are Jenny Lopez from Lyman Memorial High School and DeAndre Ducael from Norwich Free Academy. Congrats to Jenny and DeAndre!
CHSCA Boys’ Hockey Player of the Week
From the Nutmeg Conference representing SGWL is Elliot Demers who contributed to all 5 goals in two team wins along with 1 goal agains Enfield. Out of the CCC is Michael Zapp from Simsbury who 1 goal in a tie vs St. Joe’s and 3 goals in a win over Hamden. Coming out of the FCIAC is Ryan Tymon from Fairfield Warde-Ludlowe as he netted 7 goals and added 3 assists in a three game stretch. Last and certainly not least from the SCC/SWC is CJ Sherwood from North Branford who had 4 goals and 2 assists against Amity and added 3 goals and 2 assists vs Lyman Hall.
Drum roll please! This weeks winner is Elliot Demers from the Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks Co-op! Congratulations to Elliot.
This week, we’ll have a new group of candidates for the CHSCA Boys’ Hockey Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by Hamden Sports Center and Cheshire Sports Center and you can vote on the winner at CHSCA.org when the finalists are announced on Twitter.
ECC Cheerleading Event
On Saturday, Waterford High School hosted the ECC Cheerleading Event. Many great teams with skilled athletes performed and the event was a success. The Division 1 Champion was East Lyme. Division 2 champs were Waterford. Division 3 champs were Plainfield and the overall tournament champs was Waterford High School.
Ledyard and Plainville Are Sending Wrestlers to the State Open
This winter, Ledyard High School and Plainville High School wrestling sold Beef Octane Beef Jerky as a team fundraiser through NFP Sports and did a great job with it. In addition, both teams are sending wrestlers to the State Open.
In Class S, Plainville took sixth as a team with 135 team points. They had three wrestlers in the finals, all unfortunately fell short. Jeff Quirion La Oz took second at 285, Joseph Kennedy took second at 138, and Cooper Theriault-Dinielli took second at 160. In total, they’re sending five wrestlers to the State Open this weekend in New Haven.
For Ledyard, they took fifteenth at the Class M tournament with 68 team points. They’ll be sending two wrestlers to the State Open next week with Tatianna Irizarry who took third at 106 and Josiah Estriplet who took sixth at 113.
ECC Girls Basketball Tickets On Sale Now
Tomorrow night, two champions will be crowned at Mohegan Sun. At 6:00PM, the ECC Division II girls basketball finals between Stonington and Windham will be played. Two hours later at 8:00PM, New London squares off with Ledyard in the ECC Division I girls basketball finals.

Interviewing Braiden Saucier For The Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions Inspiration Award
Tomorrow, James and Andrew from the NFP team will be at Woodstock Academy to interview Braiden Saucier for the Inspiration Award that will be presented to him at the Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions on March 11.
In a regular season football game vs Enfield High School, Braiden collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. He has since recovered and is back in sports as he’s the Centaurs starting point guard. We’re looking forward to hearing Braidens story from Braiden, his father Sean, and his teammates.
The Golf Discount Pack Series
The Golf Discount Pack Series was launched approximately 10 years ago in Eastern Connecticut. It has served as a valued fundraising product for our golf teams and other groups that want to offer their supporters amazing discounts to leading golf courses. Golfers east of the Connecticut river have relished in tremendous savings while supporting local teams and groups. Due to demand, we launched it in additional markets.
