There’s lots to cover this week as the ECC had their conference wrestling tournament this past weekend, Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions tickets are on sale, and CHSCA Boys Hockey Player of the Week has been announced.
CHSCA Boys Hockey Player of the Week
Last weeks CHSCA Boys’ Hockey Player of the Week has been announced. We saw four very talented players get nominated, but unfortunately, there can only be one winner.
In the CCC, Gabe Mohr from Southington Co-op scored 5 total goals in a three game win streak against Rocky Hill, Milford, and Wilton. Out of the FCIAC is Tony Delcarmine from New Canaan. He netted 2 goals and added an assist in a 4-1 Rams win against St. Joseph. In the Nutmeg conference, goal tender Dante Sousa from Woodstock Academy saved 33 shots in a 5-0 Centaurs win against Smithfield, Rhode Island. Last and certainly not least is goal tender John Paul Garea from East Haven Co-op out of the SCC/SWC. Garea saved 27 shots in a 3-1 win against Sheehan and 40 shots in a 2-1 win over Lyman Hall.
Last weeks winner is Gabe Mohr from Southington Co-op. Congratulations to Gabe on taking home CHSCA Boys Hockey Player of the Week!
This week, we’ll have a new group of candidates for the CHSCA Boys’ Hockey Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by Hamden Sports Center and Cheshire Sports Center and you can vote on the winner at CHSCA.org when the finalists are announced on Twitter.

Shifting to indoor track, Ryan Gruzcka from Stonington High School took first place in the 3200 meter at the ECC Championship event. In addition, he broke a 24 year old record in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:42.96. Noah Colangelo from Killingly High School won the 300 meter, the High Jump and finished 2nd in the 55 meter at ECC Championship. Last and certainly not least is Ben Muckian from St. Bernard. Ben went 5-1 in Foil in fencing matches against Griswold and Waterford.
For the girls, there are eight candidates for ECC Athlete of the Week. Gianna Butler of Fitch led the cheer team as their captain to first in both JV and Varsity at the Griswold Competition. ECC Wrestling Championship
Staying in the ECC, the conference held their annual conference championship for wrestling on Saturday at Killingly High School. Windham High School took home the crown as they scored 221.5 team points. In second place was Norwich Free Academy with 188 points, third was the home team Killingly High with 184.5 points, and in fourth was East Lyme/Norwich Tech 176.5 points. The Outstanding Wrestler Award went to Montville High Schools 138 pounder, James Linder. Linder won his quarterfinals matchup by pin in 0:43 second, his semifinals match by tech fall 17-2, and his finals match with a first period pin.
The tournament champs Windham had four wrestlers in the finals with three of them winning; Delmazio Despard at 113, Malachi Fowler at 195, and Yael Garcia-Rodriguez at 220.
While we did see a lot of first time champs like freshman Delmazio Despard from Windham, there were a handful of repeat champions. Killingly 126 pound sophomore Brady Zadora won his second ECC title. Seeing that he’s only a sophomore, he’ll be looking to win four in a row the next two years. At 132, Killingly senior Kaden Ware won his third ECC title.
With the conference championship coming to an end, the ECC teams now turn their focus to the Class Championship tournaments. Good luck to all of the teams and individual wrestlers looking to make the State Open!

Jersey Mike’s Gets VIP Treatment!
Last Thursday, we highlighted the work our NFP Sports team member, Mike Massarelli has done building our line of VIP products. That product line is broken into two versions: Category VIP Products and Brand VIP Products.
Our Category VIP Products include savings that feature businesses in a certain industry. They include our Golf Discount Pack Series and Pizza Madness Series. Our Brand VIP Products feature savings at leading brands. Past and present renditions feature brands such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, Buffalo Wild Wings and Moe’s Southwest Grill. We are proud to offer our newest addition to the lineup: The Jersey Mike’s VIP Pack!
The product features exclusive discounts to select Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the state of Connecticut. Local teams will offer the product through our High Impact Fundraising Program. The program empowers student-athletes to offer the Jersey Mike’s VIP Pack to family, friends, neighbors and just about anyone throughout Connecticut that wants to support them or simply score sweet deals at the hottest sandwich shop chain in the state. Jersey Mike’s seems to be opening up locations as fast as they can build them!
While the chain has been all the rage as of late, it has been around for quite some time. It all started back in 1956 with the flagship location, Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Back then, the submarine sandwich was unique and there were very few sandwich shops who offered it. Located in a popular vacation destination on the Jersey Shore, Mike’s became known for quality subs and great service. In 1971, a 17 year old employee, Peter Cancro wanted to buy the business. Just a high school senior at the time, Pete reached out to his high school football coach for help. It didn’t hurt that his coach was also a banker and decided to back a loan for him. That made Pete the legal owner before he was even allowed to slice the meat for his iconic subs. The rest, as they say, is history and you can get the full story here: Jersey Mike's Subs - Our History
When it comes to the NFP Sports Jersey Mike’s VIP Pack, interested teams and organizations can find out how to offer it as a fundraiser by contacted us at engagement@nfpbrands.com or (860) 920-0030.
NFP Sports Joins The Connecticut Sports Community In Support Of Woodstock Academy Basketball
On the evening of February 9th following an away game against Ledyard High School, the Woodstock Academy basketball team stopped at Wendy’s in Plainfield, CT around 10:00PM. According to an article from CT Insider, the team was denied service even though the restaurant was still open. When coaches Donte Adams and Denzel Washington questioned why the establishment refused to serve the team, they were met with racial epithets and explicit language from 22 year old manager Brett White.
A customer inside the restaurant called 911 and when Plainfield police arrived, White admitted to using racial slurs.
In a statement put out on Friday from Woodstock Academy, the Head of the School Chris Sanford stated “While I am angry and devastated over this incident, I could not be more proud of our coaches and student-athletes. These coaches are building fine young men who are going to change the world,”. He also added “This experience is not only life-changing for those involved, but it has also shown that the work we have been doing as a school community in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion is more important than ever.”
Associate Head of School Holly Singleton said “I’m proud of Donte, Denzel, and other members of our community who showed integrity in the face of bigotry and hatred,”.
One of NFP Sports’ core functions is to make meaningful connections with local teams and businesses. This incident goes against everything that we at NFP Sports believe in and have been about for over twenty years.
