North Haven high schools head football coach Anthony Sagnella has won Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award. Coach Sagnella lead the Nighthawks to an 8-2 regular season record and then went on to win the Class MM State title beating Killingly 51-34.
Coach Sagnella has been the head football coach at North Haven high school since 1997 and is the longest tenured coach at NHHS and is second in the state of Connecticut as he’s been with the Nighthawks for 26 years. Sagnella has a career record of 152-116-2 with 9 playoff appearances and 1 state championship win. In addition to winning Walter Camp Coach of the Year, Coach Sagnella also took home CHSCA Coach of the Year.
In addition to being a legendary high school football coach in Connecticut, Coach Sagnella played for the Washington Redskins in 1987 as one of the teams “replacement players” when players went on strike. The 1987 Redskins team went on to win the Super Bowl that season, but because Sagnella was a “replacement player” he only played in three games. He was later awarded his rightfully deserved Super Bowl ring in 2018.
Congratulations to Coach Sagnella on a great season and for winning Walter Camp Coach of the Year award.
