Thursday News Blast: CHSCA All State Football Banquet, CHSCA Boys' Hockey Player of the Week

Last night at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, Connecticut, the CHSCA hosted the 2022 All State Football banquet to honor the student athletes and coaches who had outstanding seasons. Along with honoring the All State teams and Players of the Week, four awards were given out last evening. This includes Assistant Coach of the Year, Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Team of the Year.
The NFP Sports team was on location last night recording interviews with these award winners and those videos will be released next week.
CHSCA Assistant Coach of the Year was won by West Haven High Schools defensive coordinator, Tom Unger. Coach Unger stepped up this season while Coach Boshea was away from the program battling cancer and helped lead the Blue Devils to a 9-1 regular season record and a Class LL State Playoff berth.
The recipient of the CHSCA Coach of the Year award went to North Haven High Schools Anthony Sagnella. He led the Nighthawks to an 8-2 regular season record and a Class MM State Championship victory over Killingly 51-34. Coach Sagnella has been the head football coach at North Haven high school since 1997 and is the longest tenured coach at NHHS. He’s the second longest tenured in the state of Connecticut as he’s been with the Nighthawks for 26 years. Sagnella has a career record of 152-116-2 with 9 playoff appearances and 1 state championship win.
In addition to winning CHSCA Coach of the Year, Coach Sagnella is a finalist for Walter Camp Coach of the Year. The winner of that award will be announced on March 11 at the Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions at the Omni Hotel in New Haven, CT.
Jonathan Law quarterback John Neider had himself quite the season. Last night, he took home CHSCA Player of the Year and has also won CT Gatorade Player of the Year and is a finalist for Walter Camp Player of the Year. The winner of that award will be announced on March 11 at the Walter Camp Breakfast of Champions at the Omni Hotel in New Haven, CT.
This season, Neider passed for 2,289 yards, 30 touchdowns, rushed for 1,696 yards, and 24 touchdowns. He led the Lawmen to a 9-1 regular season record advanced to the Class M State Semifinals.
The final award of the night was for CHSCA Team of the Year. This years recipient was the New Canaan High School Rams football team. The Rams went 9-1 in the regular season and then ran the table in the Class L State Playoffs beating Naugatuck 17-7, Cheshire 23-13, and Maloney in the Class L State Championship game 16-13.
New Canaan was coached by head coach Lou Marinelli. In his 41 seasons with the Rams, Marinelli has totaled 13 state championship wins and is the winningest coach in Connecticut high school football history with a record of 381-111-7. The Rams were led by senior captains Mack Seelert, Ty Groff, Walker Blair, Graham Ladley, and Javier Perez-Soto. In addition to those five, New Canaan graduates a total of twenty six seniors this upcoming June. Congratulations to the New Canaan Rams on winning the CHSC Team of the Year award.

CHSCA Boys’ Hockey Player of the Week
Last week, the CHSCA and NFP Sports implemented the Boys’ Ice Hockey Player of the Week program sponsored by Hamden Sports Center and Cheshire Sports Center. The winner for last week was announced and it was Don Sousa from Woodstock Academy. Sousa notched 8 points in two games against Burrillville (RI) and Housatonic co-op with 3 assists and 5 goals, including 1 power play and 2 short-handed goals.
This weeks four candidates have been announced and you have until 8:00 PM tonight to vote on CHSCA.org for who you think should win.
This weeks players are Anthony Ruck from Wethersfield, who netted 5 goals and 1 assist in a win against Guilford and 2 assists in a win over Sheehan. Nikos Ninios from Staples totaled 3 goals and 1 assist over two games and scored the game winning goal against McMahon/Norwalk. The third candidate is Max Festa from Sheehan High School who tallied 10 points in two games. Festa scored 4 goals and added 5 assists in a 10-1 win over North Branford and scored 1 goal in a 3-1 loss to Wethersfield. Last and certainly not least is Owen Pazzaglia from Eastern CT. Pazzaglia netted 1 goal and tacked on 3 assists in a 6-3 win over SGWL.
